I. THE RESTAURANT

The last wing has a cost.

A menu price can reflect ingredients, labor, rent, energy, waste and a margin. It also reflects what diners will pay. A pricier wing alone cannot tell us which component changed—or whether the restaurant is more profitable.

II. THE COUNTRY

Inflation needs a second date.

Menus collected once reveal price differences. They cannot measure inflation. Track comparable orders at the same restaurants over time before claiming wings got more expensive. Even then, a wing index would cover a tiny slice of household spending.

III. THE STATE

A dollar has a postcode.

State price levels differ. Divide menu price by the state’s regional price parity, with the U.S. set to 100, to compare in common purchasing-power units. This broad adjustment includes much more than restaurant food; it does not measure a diner’s income.

A very large hypothesis.

If comparable wings cost different amounts after currency conversion, the gap can illustrate purchasing power. It cannot, by itself, prove that a currency is mispriced. Portion size, taxes, local costs and menu differences all matter.

This is a hypothetical calculator. We have no international menu observations or live exchange-rate feed. The U.S. comparison uses our small sample, not a national average.

How the benchmark is calculated

For each sourced menu, divide regular bone-in order price by menu-listed piece count. The active dated database edition supplies the eligible observations. Then take the arithmetic mean of those unit prices, giving each restaurant equal weight. This is not weighted by orders sold, population or market share. The shortlist favors acclaimed wing restaurants and is not a representative sample of U.S. restaurants.

What we know, and what remains missing

Prices use the regular bone-in order closest to ten pieces, with the smaller order breaking a tie. Standard Buffalo or base seasoning is preferred where available. Dips, garnish and piece sizes vary. Brand menus and representative branches are identified in each row. Whole wings, meal bundles, specials and orders without a reliable piece count are excluded. Menu pages were retrieved September 15, 2026. The price table links to each source. No historical series, transaction volumes, international prices or national sampling weights are available.

    Purchasing power, population and taste are different things

    State adjustment uses BEA 2024 all-items regional price parities. The separate per-capita ranking divides unit price by Census 2025 state population; it favors populous states and does not estimate average customer spending. Neither price preset multiplies by Jon’s quality score. Taste rankings live in the restaurant explorer.
